Acute deaths in ostrich showing congestion of internal organs, possibly the result of gifblaar toxicity.

Newton Sparks, 30 August 2023

Good day. Would a severe congested pro-ventriculus like this in an ostrich fit in with avian influenza? Also congested liver, lungs, congestion in first part of trachea. Subcutaneous petechiae on chest, but not on serosal surfaces. 3 died acutely. Toxins would also be a DD at this stage.

Diarrhoea as well??

Willem Burger, [30 Aug 2023 at 13:20:24]:

Not always

Thanks Willem.

Lots of clostridia on impression smear of proventriculus!

Henry Labuschagne, [30 Aug 2023 at 18:17:30]:

How old are they?

Did they get any Clostridia vaccinations, especially lamb dysentery?

Newton Sparks, [06 Sep 2023 at 23:03:10]:

The ostrich that I mentioned a couple of days ago with congested proventriculus, tested negative for avian influenza and NCD ( with lab results as well as alive, in contact chickens test). There is a possibility of gifblaar poisoning as well. Young shoots of gifblaar demonstrated in the camp (no deaths while they were removed from the camp but bird affected again once they were moved back to the camp.) Has anybody seen gifblaar poisoning in ostrich? I can only find referral to one ostrich death due to gifblaar on the internet.

Dichapetalum cymosum is very toxic to ostriches. I lost a few of my own ostriches due to gifblaar in the Marico bushveld. Is there evidence of new shoots being eaten in the camp ?

Any gifblaar leaves seen in GIT of dead birds ?

Newton Sparks, [07 Sep 2023 at 10:55:00]:

Thanks Henry. Yes there were some leaves eaten by something. Don't see any dead worms lying around, so might be the ostriches. Leaves too ground up in the gizzard to identify anything...
